Environmental Justice Australia (EJA) is a national public interest legal centre. We are lawyers and campaigners using a powerful combination of law and advocacy to empower communities, protect and regenerate nature, safeguard our climate, and achieve environmental justice. Our vision is for a legal system that delivers environmental justice for communities and the preservation and restoration of nature. We are proudly non-profit, non-government, and funded by donations from the community.

Australia’s natural habitats are precious, life-sustaining resources and hold a remarkable history of people living in harmony with the land and sea. But the laws, designed to protect the lands, waterways, and wildlife we love, are failing us.

Big polluting companies have a powerful influence on many parts of our political system, weakening our laws and accelerating fossil fuel projects. Legal loopholes and bad decisions allow our magnificent forests to be cut down. National safeguards for our threatened wildlife are not stopping mining, logging, and land clearing from pushing them to the brink. Serious failures of government have left our life-giving rivers drying up and pollution choked.

EJA exists because we believe the law is a powerful lever to disrupt the status quo, change the overarching systems driving destruction and create a fairer future for people and nature.

EJA has a proven track record of using litigation, legal interventions and advocacy to achieve systemic change for nature protection. Our strategic litigation over many years contributed to the monumental decision to end native forest logging in Victoria.
