Organisation Summary

The first objective of the Friends of Myall Creek Memorial is to maintain and develop a memorial (built in 2000) to the 28 or more Wirrrayaraay people who were massacred by the son of a squatter and a group of eleven convicts and ex-convicts at Myall Creek Station on Saturday, 10 June 1838. The second objective is to memorialise and teach the truth of the shared history of Aboriginal and other Australians across the continent during the period of invasion/settlement with a view to contributing to a more just reconciliation between our peoples. A third objective is to construct an Education and Cultural Centre to be located next to the memorial at Myall Creek, NSW.

The current project for which we are seeking funding is related to the second objective of truth-telling. At events such as the annual commemoration of the massacre, which is attended by hundreds of participants on the second Sunday in June, we make available one booklet about the Myall Creek massacre and another about the frontier conflicts across Australia.

Our supply of the latter Frontier Conflicts booklet has run low and we need to reprint it. This booklet has been a well received educational resource that has opened the minds of many non-Aboriginal people while supporting Aboriginal viewpoints and knowledge. We also need to reprint our Myall Creek banners which have become damaged after many years of use at commemorations and other events. These banners are important in providing visibility for our goals at events.
