GRAI GLBTI Rights in Ageing

GRAI – Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Rights in Ageing Inc was formed in Perth in 2005 to protect the rights and well-being of older LGBTI people. We are a community controlled, culturally safe, not-for-profit organisation, working to ensure that older LGBTI people will be safe and welcomed wherever they are.

GRAI addresses the social isolation and loneliness that many older LGBTI people experience, as they are more likely to have experienced physical violence, imprisonment, abuse and bullying, are more likely to have poor mental health, no children or other family to support them. If living at home, they likely to be depending other older LGBTI friends/partner for support, who may also have dementia, poor health or mobility issues.

Our current projects include:
– Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme Intergenerational volunteer visitor program connecting LGBTIQA+ people to LGBTI older people in residential aged care or receiving support at home.
– Regular Social events for older LGBTI people.
– Death literacy program, including LGBTI death cafes and workshops on end-of-life documents

We are seeking funding to continue our Intergenerational Housing Pilot A supportive shared accommodation pilot linking older LGBTI people with a spare room to LGBTIQA+ students. Additional funding will support the ongoing community controlled, culturally safe coordination of this home share project.
