Heaps Decent is an Australian music and arts organisation working with underrepresented and marginalised young people to create spaces where voices, stories and creativity can thrive. Founded in 2007, Heaps Decent delivers participatory music and visual media programs that provide pathways to creative expression, skills development and personal growth; acting as a catalyst for young people to become empowered, confident and engaged in their communities.
Our vision is a future where every young person can access the arts as a powerful tool for self-expression, connection and opportunity.
We work with young people who are often furthest from the centre of opportunity, including those in youth justice centres, specialist schools, residential care, refuges, and regional and remote communities. By providing access to technology, music and visual art making through mobile production studios and collaboration with professional artists, we amplify young voices, fostering inclusion, celebrating diversity and advancing creative equity. Participants develop creative, technical and personal skills while sharing their stories and raising the profile of perspectives often absent from mainstream cultural narratives.
For nearly 20 years Heaps Decent delivers over 400 workshops annually, having worked with more than 8,000 young people who have created over 10,000 original works.
Our current priorities include expanding programs in regional and remote communities, strengthening pathways for emerging artists, and increasing organisational capacity to meet growing demand. Funding will enable Heaps Decent to reach more young people experiencing disadvantage and support artists from underrepresented communities to progress into the music and arts industries.
