Housing for the Aged Action Group

Housing for the Aged Action Group is a community based organisation specialising in the housing needs of older people. The organisation was formed just over 40 years ago and today has over 900 members that actively campaign for housing justice. HAAG’s service arm is the Home at Last Service which provides a one-stop shop of housing information, support, advice and advocacy for people aged 50 years and older in Victoria. Their early intervention and prevention approach includes targeted community education to people who face barriers to accessing service, and professional education to service providers who work with older people to recognise risk factors for homelessness. They assist approximately 1800 older people a year with information and advice, and support around 150 people per year to obtain long term, affordable housing. 60% of their clients are women, and over 50% CALD.

HAAG empowers members and clients by elevating the voices of older people to shape their service, engage with the community, raise awareness, and in policy and advocacy. Their policy and advocacy work combines research with lived experience in order to raise awareness of the housing crisis and strive for improvement. Through their older people’s reference groups, they understand responses need to be tailored, including for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander older people, LGBTI people, for culturally and linguistically diverse communities and for people with disability. They advocate for recognition that older people at risk of homelessness are a distinct group requiring specialist support, pathways and housing outcomes.
