VISION: Australians protect nature by caring for invertebrates.
MISSION: To influence conservation action, investigate solutions and inspire engagement as the expert voice for invertebrates to benefit Australian nature and people.
Invertebrates are the bees, beetles, and flies that pollinate crops and wildflowers; the corals, urchins, and crabs that build reefs; the snails, millipedes, and worms that enrich soil and compost forests; the dragonflies and yabbies that maintain our rivers; the oysters, clams, and sponges that purify our seas; and the cuttlefish, crabs, and moths that migrate vast distances through our lands and waters. Invertebrates also harbour nature-based solutions, provide important connections to and interactions with nature for people, and challenge people toward more inclusive attitudes and behaviours. In Australia, we are the custodians of some of the world’s most important and unique invertebrate species and the intricate relationships they have created over millions of years. Australia’s invertebrate fauna constitutes an enormous 5% of total global biodiversity. More than 80 percent of Australia’s estimated 320 000 invertebrate species are found nowhere else in the world.
Even though there is much yet to learn about them, we know that we have enough information to act. Invertebrates have traditionally been considered too difficult to understand, identify, count, measure and sometimes just too ‘other’. We believe we can overcome these problems. We cannot allow the neglect of invertebrates to continue, they are too wonderful and too important to ignore.
