Lionheart provides support for children, teens and families who are grieving the death of a family member. Unfortunately, 1 in 20 children in Australia will experience the death of one or both parents by the age of 16. Statistics show these children have a higher risk than their peers of developing negative life factors such as anxiety, depression, and poor health.
Since 2017, Lionheart has been building lionhearts to prevent these adverse outcomes by educating and empowering young people and their caregivers to integrate grief into their lives in healthy and meaningful ways.
Our aim is to ensure that no child grieves alone and hence our priority is to increase our group and one-to-one support programs to reach more children and families in need, especially in regional areas.
In addition, part of our funding goes towards education sessions for schools and community groups which helps create a more compassionate and caring society where grief is seen as a natural, healthy and normal response to loss.
‘The services offered by Lionheart are not provided elsewhere in health. We understand the importance of good bereavement care to minimise long-term adverse consequences for children and wholeheartedly support Lionheart in their endeavours’ Dr. Lisa Cuddeford (WA Paedeatric Pallative Care Service).
