Organisation Summary

Material Institute is a Tasmanian charity dedicated to creating the conditions for healthier, more resilient futures for children, young people, and their families. Strong healthy communities connected to place, to each other, and to a regenerative future.

Our mission is to challenge the status quo by nurturing wellbeing through creativity, collaboration, and community-led innovation. We pursue this mission through four strategic focus areas: Regenerative Learning, Connected Communities, Creative Livelihoods, and Emergent Narratives. Across these, we aim to amplify a positive and connected food culture, strengthen community belonging, promote hands-on learning, and cultivate social imagination guiding the transition from short-term fixes to systemic redesign.

Our flagship 24 Carrot Gardens program operates in 24 schools across Tasmania, teaching thousands of students to grow, cook, and share food, while fostering curiosity and healthy habits. Beyond schools, we run two community garden hubs – in Bridgewater and Gagebrook in the Brighton LGA – and an annual program of workshops and events. Based in Kutalalayna/Jordan River, our learning spaces include: a Beauty Lab, the Botanical Kitchen, an Art Studio and a one-acre market garden that model circular, zero-waste practices.

Through our programs, partnerships & storytelling, we catalyse social impact and amplify community voices. In all we do, we are guided by community – fostering the conditions where health, creativity and belonging thrive.
