Organisation Summary

Established in 2000, Mercy Works is the development arm of the Sisters of Mercy in Australia & Papua New Guinea. We work in partnership with vulnerable communities and local organisations both domestically and in the Asia Pacific region. We work with the people of these communities and organisations to build capacity, dignity and self-reliance through access to basic resources such as education, healthcare and social welfare.

Our programs and partnerships align with our values of Mutuality, Integrity, Compassion and Justice. Locally we support refugee & asylum seekers, and indigenous communities through projects in education/employment training, cultural healing, reconnection, advocacy, and child protection. In PNG, the Philippines and Timor-Leste, our work focuses on education, life skills & technical training, agriculture, healthcare, social welfare, microfinancing, livelihood activities, prisoner rehabilitation for communities living in poverty.

Mercy Works is Sydney-based with locations across Australia and PNG. We are administered by a Board of 8 Directors, with 2 sub-committees (Finance Risk & Audit and Programs). FY23 total revenue $1.6m. Mercy Works relies on a diverse range of revenue streams to deliver its projects – including Sisters of Mercy Congregation member contributions and grants from other charitable trusts, foundations, donations from schools, organisations and individuals.

Partnerships: We have a proven record of accomplishment in delivering programs both directly and through carefully chosen implementing partner organisations. This involves our commitment to ensuring strong risk management and due diligence processes, as demonstrated by our ACFID Code of Conduct membership (a voluntary, self-regulatory industry code of good practice).
