Namatjira Haven is a live-in substance use healing centre for Aboriginal men and their mob based in the Northern Rivers, New South Wales.
Our Story: In the 1960s, Pastor Frank Roberts, his brother Fletcher Roberts and a group of community members were concerned about the impact alcohol was having on the Aboriginal community. Their vision was to have a place of healing, a special place where people could have time out to work on their issues.
After many years of hard work and lobbying government departments, funding was granted, and Namatjira Haven was opened on 12th May 1979.
The service was originally run by the Bundjalung Tribal Society until it became an incorporated independent entity in 2007.
Today, Namatjira Haven provides residential programs for Aboriginal men requiring assistance in dealing with substance use disorders and related issues. The centre is currently has 14 beds and is located on Widjabul/Wia-bul land on the beautiful NSW North Coast, 2.5 kms from Alstonville
Over 3000 Aboriginal men have passed through our doors to find ‘ Gulgihwen’ (Change in the local traditional language) in our ‘ Gulgihwen’ program.
