The National Ageing Research Institute (NARI) is Australia’s leading independent, non-profit medical research institute dedicated to improving the lives of older people. Our vision is a world where older people are respected, included, and have every opportunity to age well.

The Challenge
Australia’s ageing population is growing rapidly, yet many older people face barriers to quality care, experience ageism, and live with preventable health conditions. These challenges impact families, communities, and the health system.

Our Role
For 50 years, NARI has led world-class research into ageing and aged care—from healthy ageing to end-of-life care. We work in partnership with older people, carers, clinicians, and policymakers to ensure our research is practical, relevant, and creates real-world impact.

Current Research Programs:
– Supporting healthy ageing, including preventative and early intervention programs.
– Reducing the prevalence, morbidity and mortality of geriatric syndromes / other specific conditions associated with ageing.
– Improving knowledge, confidence, health and wellbeing and quality of life of paid and unpaid carers.
– Improving health and aged care systems, processes and practices (including evaluations, models of care development, quality improvement, health economics, equity and access, and technology).
– Addressing societal issues associated with ageing (including ageism, elder abuse).
