Only Passing Thru

Only Passing Thru (OPT) is dedicated to supporting disadvantaged communities through healthcare, education and community capacity-building initiatives. Established in Australia in 2000, the organisation has more than two decades of experience working alongside vulnerable communities both in Australia and internationally.

OPT operates as a volunteer-run charity, allowing donations and grants to be directed primarily to program delivery and frontline partners. The organisation works through trusted local partnerships to ensure that assistance is practical, culturally appropriate and sustainable.

The organisation’s early work began through community initiatives supporting remote Indigenous youth in northern Australia, particularly through mentoring, education and leadership programs in Cape York communities. This work was initially carried out through Out There Kowanyama (OTK) Inc, which later merged into Only Passing Thru Ltd as the organisation’s activities expanded.

In recent years, OPT has focused significant effort on supporting communities affected by the war in Ukraine. The organisation works in partnership with local healthcare organisations, particularly the Christian Medical Association of Ukraine, to provide medical training, educational programs and practical support to healthcare workers serving rural and war-affected communities.

A key initiative is the MedLearnUke medical education platform, which provides accessible clinical education for doctors and nurses working in resource-limited and conflict-affected settings. By strengthening the skills and knowledge of local healthcare providers, OPT aims to improve access to healthcare for vulnerable populations and build long-term resilience within community health systems.
