Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia (ORRCA) is a dedicated not-for-profit run entirely by skilled volunteers, committed to the rescue, rehabilitation and research of marine mammals along the Australian coastline. With more than 1,200 members and over 500 rescue team volunteers across 14 east-coast hubs, ORRCA plays a crucial role in conserving and protecting our marine mammals.
Our highly trained teams respond to call-outs via a 24/7 hotline, assisting stranded, injured or entangled whales, dolphins, seals and dugongs. We work closely with the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and partner organisations such as the Sea World Foundation to coordinate complex, multi-day rescues and marine mammal rehabilitation. With a strong focus on conservation and public education, ORRCA is an essential part of Australia’s marine wildlife protection network.
Since our establishment in 1985, ORRCA has achieved significant milestones in marine mammal rescue, rehabilitation and research. Our extensive volunteer network – experts in marine biology, veterinary science, rescue operations and specialised animal care – forms the backbone of the organisation. These passionate individuals donate their time and expertise to protect Australia’s marine life and make our work possible.
As we enter our 40th year, demand for ORRCA’s resources and skills continues to grow. Expanding training programs and upgrading rescue equipment are critical to ensure we remain fully prepared to respond to emergencies and safeguard Australia’s marine mammals for decades to come.
