estara is the trading name of the Paraplegic and Quadriplegic Association of South Australia’s (PQSA). We are the peak body for spinal cord injury (SCI) in South Australia as well as a registered charity and NDIS provider. Our purpose is to support and empower South Australians living with spinal cord injuries and other disabilities to choose how they live their potential.
Started by a group of volunteers in 1963, lived experience is embedded into the work we do from Board and Governance through to our Consumer Advisory Panel and employees with SCI. We currently provide a range of free services to people living with spinal cord injury across regional and metropolitan South Australia including:
• Community programs for people living with SCI, including Inclusive Beach Days and Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week activities.
• Family dinners hosted by our Spinal Nurse advisers who invite parents, siblings, partners, children and carers of people with SCI to meet and share experiences.
• Volunteer program – over 1,800 volunteer hours were recorded in the 2024/2025 financial year. Volunteers donated their time to assist people living with SCI with garden maintenance, home maintenance, dog walking and assistance to participate in social activities.
• Pro bono allied health: in 2024/2025 estara’s clinical team donated 5,289 hours of pro bono support to people living with a spinal cord injury.
• Spinal Cord Injury Peer Mentoring – based in metro Adelaide at the Repat hospital and focused on providing advice, reassurance and counselling through the rehabilitation
