Parents for Climate

Founded in 2019 by six regional, rural and urban mums across four states, Parents for Climate has grown rapidly to fill a critical gap in Australia’s climate movement. We are a parent organisation, run by parents for parents.

With 26 local groups in every state and territory and over 26,000 supporters and 26 local groups in every state and territory, we represent families from across the political spectrum and in every federal electorate. We are proudly non-partisan, we talk about policies, not political parties.

Australia’s children will live through the full consequences of decisions being made right now. Floods, heatwaves, bushfires and drought are already intensifying, and our governments have been too slow to act.

Currently, two thirds of schools in Australia face high climate risk. This is set to increase to 84% of schools by 2060 under an intermediate climate scenario assuming 2 degrees Celsius of warming.

Children attending Australia’s most disadvantaged schools are already navigating significant barriers to learning, and climate change is making those barriers higher. Research shows that 83% of schools in the lowest socio-educational decile face significant climate risk, compared to just 58% of the most advantaged schools. Rather than levelling the playing field, climate change is tilting it further, falling hardest on the communities that can least afford it, and deepening educational divides that were already wide.

The barriers are clear: fossil fuel vested interests, a lack of political leadership, and a public that is concerned but not yet mobilised.

Progress on ambitious, science-aligned climate action has been delayed for too long. This decade will determine what kind of world today’s children inherit. The window to act is now.
