Organisation Summary

The Romero Centre provides individualised, culturally sensitive, and responsive case coordination services for people seeking asylum, including children and families. We are a team of 6 staff and 19 volunteers assisting over 500 people seeking asylum each year. We employ former and current people seeking asylum as bicultural tutors, providing language support and mentorship to empower others, foster hope, and create pathways to employment and a brighter future.

Our service is unique in the Greater Brisbane Area – we are both the first port of call and sometimes the place of last resort for people seeking asylum who have been unable to access other services due to visa restrictions or resource limitations. Our services consist of case coordination, housing support, a pantry providing food and household items for individuals and families with children, English as a Second Language (ESL), an employment program, and women groups.

We also serve as a community hub where resources are channelled to support individuals, families, and children. For example, during Christmas 2024 and the 2025 New Year we distributed 84 backpacks filled with gifts to families and children we support. We provided over 20,000 nights of accommodation for people without a home in 2024. Between 1 July 2024 and 31 January 2025, we assisted 35 people to find employment.

Our work is funded by donations and grants and current funding priorities are to ensure our pantry is well stocked and we are able to expand our employment and housing programs in response to increased demand.
