Safe and Equal

Safe and Equal is the independent peak body for specialist family violence services in Victoria. We bring together evidence, lived experience, and practice expertise to drive systemic change and strengthen the family violence sector, to ensure that adults, children, and young people experiencing or at risk of family and gender-based violence can live free from harm.

We believe this is one of the most pressing social issues in Australia. We know that failing to intervene early is expensive, and these impacts are only increasing. Intervening too late now costs the federal government $22.3 billion per year, which is an increase of 40% in just 5 years . But the figures don’t tell us anything about the real experience of living in fear.

Our solution is to lead a coordinated and evidence-based approach to end family violence by:

• Advocating for systemic change
• Building sector capability
• Championing prevention
• Centering lived experience
• Working in partnership
• Researching to improve outcomes

But we need to do so much more. Government funding alone cannot meet the growing demand for services or the innovation needed to prevent violence before it starts. Your support will help us to expand primary prevention programs that will stop violence before it occurs. It will enable us to provide better training and resources to the specialist member organisations we serve, and it will help to amplify advocacy and research to influence policy and create lasting change.
