Sharks and Rays Australia (SARA) exists to protect Australia’s sharks, rays, and sawfish — some of the most threatened species in our rivers and oceans. By combining world-class science with Indigenous knowledge, community participation, and public education, we are creating lasting conservation impact where it matters most.
SARA is building Australia’s first national model for grassroots, data-driven marine conservation by:
– Partnering with Aboriginal Land and Sea Rangers to conduct rigorous research and long-term monitoring
– Training rangers, students, and young scientists
– Engaging the public through citizen science, events, outreach, and exhibitions
– Sharing results widely to inform policymakers and industry
This approach creates conservation that is scientifically credible, community-led, culturally grounded, and lasting.
Mission statement: “We are building a future for endangered sharks and rays by enabling stewardship through First Nations people, combining scientific research with on-country knowledge for long-term conservation.”
