St Kilda Community Housing

St Kilda Community Housing (SCH) is a grassroots not-for-profit working to end local homelessness by providing safe, secure, and low-barrier housing to single adults with the most complex needs. For over forty years, we have supported people on the lowest incomes. those often excluded from other housing services due to mental ill-health, rough sleeping, trauma, or substance use.

We currently house more than 300 people in long-term rooming house accommodation, mostly within properties leased to us by government for a nominal fee. Despite this scale and complexity, we receive no ongoing funding and rely solely on rent linked to our tenants’ low incomes.

Our goal is to offer safe permanent homes to local people experiencing homelessness and then to keep them housed, no matter their circumstances.

We are now scaling our impact through three key initiatives:

Madden House – our first capital project, nearing completion, providing 26 homes to long-term rough sleepers.

The Building Momentum Fund – raising capital to purchase additional blocks of flats and converting them to Supportive Housing.

The Second Chances Fund – preventing avoidable evictions by supporting tenants through crisis periods.

SCH has a proven record of reducing homelessness churn and preventing costly crisis interventions. Funding will allow us end local homelessness by expanding our housing options, intervening earlier, and building sustainable, local solutions. Our plan to rapidly end local rough sleeping is achievable with targeted support.

We hold DGR1 status and welcome partnerships with those who share our vision of housing as a human right.
