Story Hunter is an initiative of the Newcastle Writers Festival (NWF), pairing local writers with local schools to nurture the creativity of the next generation. Story Hunter’s vision is to see every child equipped with the skills and confidence to tell their story. The Story Hunter program connects primary schools with professional writers to deliver engaging, collaborative writing workshops. Each workshop provides students and teachers with a firsthand look at the processes behind the books they love. Our workshops are run as flexible incursions in schools within the wider Hunter region including Cessnock, Maitland, Singleton, Dungog, Port Stephens, Lake Macquarie and Newcastle.
We believe that creativity is a mindset that stretches beyond the page, into a range of industries and endeavours, and that it will be an essential quality for future generations. We understand that storytelling is a vehicle not only for establishing literacy skills, but also for connecting with land and people, for communicating ideas, developing empathy, solving problems, and finding joy. We are seeking funding to run free workshops in targeted schools who face barriers to access due to cost and/or distance
