The Boite Vic

Founded in 1979, The Boîte is Victoria’s iconic multicultural music organisation, creating opportunities for culturally diverse artists and musicians to contribute to a richer, more inclusive Australia. Founded in 1979, it supports practitioners from diverse communities, promoting cultural understanding through the dynamic presentation of unique musical experiences, and nurturing creativity, collaboration, access to and active participation in the arts. In 48 years, we have supported hundreds of artists, putting them before audiences of thousands.

The Boite’s participatory program largely takes the form of workshops, including choirs – Melbourne Georgian Choir and Sonidos Del Alma (Spanish Sounds of the Soul) and an annual large cultural singing project for 1000 Victorian school children. We offer a skill development program for young, culturally diverse musicians seeking to enter the music industry.

– Ava (Farsi for Voice) developed from a group of Iranian women singing pop songs, into a twelve year program of tapestry weaving, led by artists from the Australian Tapestry Workshop. It offers an art and craft project, designed for refugee and asylum seeker women learning to live in Australia.

Many are isolated, have problems with mental health and well-being, some are subject to family violence. We offer a community of interests, access to support and we design effective programs through partnership with other organizations, giving each participant a voice and power to share ideas and stories, find friends, learn from each other and put behind differences. We ensure that their views and needs are included in present and future projects.
