When a child misses a beat in their education, the effects can be profound and long-lasting. The Song Room exists to level the learning playing field for Australia’s most vulnerable children to improve their education, wellbeing, and community engagement outcomes through sequential participation in evidence-based arts learning programs. We do this alongside partners, schools, creative professionals, and community to ensure children experiencing disadvantage are equipped with the skills and opportunities to thrive at school and in life.
Despite extensive evidence that links music and arts-based programs with decreased absenteeism, better grades and improved wellbeing, the education equity gap continues to grow. Our research shows that 3 out of 4 Australian schools still do not have a specialist music teacher, leaving 1.7 million children without access to the crucial benefits of the arts at school.
The Song Room is the only Australian education organisation delivering multi-year, multi-artform arts learning programs with student and teacher outcomes. Grounded in evidence, our work helps children build confidence, connection and resilience so that they can reach their full potential beyond the classroom. Through sustained, curriculum-aligned arts learning, our programs increase student engagement, deepen cultural connection, and grow access to educational inclusion and equity.
Centred on place-based needs, strengths and context, we work collaboratively with diverse community leaders, experts, and advocates including leading and emerging cultural artists, Elders, and families to deliver rich arts experiences that honour, celebrate and share cultural knowledge to engage and nurture student learning and belonging.
