Transit Soup Kitchen and Food Support

Transit Soup Kitchen & Food Support is a community-based organisation in Narre Warren supporting people experiencing hardship across Melbourne’s South-East.

Since opening in 2009, Transit has become a consistent and trusted place for people to turn during difficult times. Each week, we support approximately 1,700 people through two free three-course community meals and access to a household’s worth of free groceries, allocated through a simple means-tested process to ensure support reaches those most in need.

People come from all walks of life and are welcomed regardless of background or belief. This includes families under financial pressure, people experiencing homelessness or housing instability, women and children fleeing domestic violence and individuals navigating sudden crisis or ongoing disadvantage.

Our approach is simple – meet immediate need first, then reduce barriers to further support.

Food is often the first step when people are in crisis. It provides a consistent place to return, where people are treated with dignity and feel safe. Over time, this builds trust. From there, we work alongside trusted partners to bring support directly onsite, including health care, legal assistance, financial counselling and pathways to employment. This reduces common barriers and allows support to happen in a practical and timely way. Helping people move from simplysurviving to thriving.
