Truth & Treaty For Victoria

A call to support Truth Telling & Treatymaking in Victoria.

We are at a unique and critical point in time in Australia’s history. First Peoples are currently in State-wide Treaty negotiations with the Victorian Government, working towards agreement on Australia’s first Treaty. A Treaty that will draw on and advance the advocacy and work of First Peoples over many generations, including the ground-breaking work that has been undertaken by the Yoorrook Justice Commission (Yoorrook), the first truth-telling commission for First Peoples in Australia.

The combined of truth-telling and Treaty will make the transition to a new Treaty Era in Victoria.

Truth- telling will provide a genuine platform for healing and reconciliation in Victoria.

Treaty will fundamentally change the relationship between First Peoples and the State and lay the foundations for self-government and nation-building. Outcomes negotiated and enabled through Treaty will improve the day-to-day experience and outcomes of First People in Victoria and will benefit all Victorians.

The truth-telling work of Yoorrook and Treatymaking in Victoria will not only deliver transformational outcomes for First Peoples and the broader community here, they will also provide a platform for truth-telling and Treaty outside of Victoria.

Truth-telling is a foundation for understanding and for Treaty. It is critical that the work of Yoorook and the Assembly be resourced for success.

In order to build understanding and momentum, now is a critical time for First Peoples and their Allies to mobilise, to take advantage of the unique opportunity that the negotiation of Treaty provides.

Recognising the ongoing importance of truth-telling as a foundation for Treaty, Yoorrook and the Assembly are working together to seek funding support for the important, transformational work being undertaken in Victoria.
