Organisation Summary

In the late 1970’s, local Aboriginal community members met in their homes, around the kitchen table, discussing their shared vision of forming an organisation that could be a place for the Aboriginal community to come together.

On 22 May 1980, their vision would come to life as the Geelong and District Aboriginal Co-operative was officially incorporated as an Aboriginal Community Controlled organisation, with an office space on the Geelong waterfront. Later our name would change to Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative to acknowledge the Wathaurong (Wadda-wurrung) people, the Traditional Owners and custodians of the lands of the local community.

We are proud that today our service provision and facility building has steadily grown from these humble beginnings. We now provide support to over 8,000 Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people within our catchment area.

Wathaurong provides a wide range of health, wellbeing and social services to its Community, including clinical services, social and emotional wellbeing services, early years and development services, maternal and child health, family violence support, disability and aged care services.

Wathaurong's mission is centred on Strong Community, Strong Culture and Strong Culture.

While we are always seeking funding to support a number of our community programs, our current focus is our Wathaurong Dreaming Project – a $43.6m redevelopment of our heart and community home at Morgan Street, North Geelong, to unite all of our current leased facilities into one building and support our holistic healthcare model.
