Organisation Summary

The Waypoint Foundation is committed to both the preservation of the historic Tall Ship Alma Doepel for future generations and the development of young people through sail training programs on her. Built in Australia in 1903, Alma Doepel is Australia’s oldest wooden tall ship and is undergoing restoration which is scheduled for completion in Docklands this year or at another location early next year if full funding is not obtained this year. Youth development sail training voyages will resume next year with flagship 9-day voyages for 36 young people as well as shorter duration voyages.

The target population of these development voyages will be young people from various backgrounds with a focus on disadvantaged and ‘at-risk’ youth, young people with disability and young emerging leaders. The disadvantaged include youth with mental illness, depression and drug dependency, youth in the criminal justice system, at risk of homelessness or from a low socio-economic background. As in the past, we will obtain funding to be able to provide either part or full scholarships to enable disadvantaged young people to participate in development voyages.

During the restoration of Alma Doepel modifications will provide disability access to the ship as well as disability accommodation to enable people of all ages with disability to board and tour an historic tall ship while berthed, to participate in day sailing and overnight voyages and for young people to participate in youth development sail training multi-day voyages.
