Project Summary
Advocates for Change is a unique program run by Engender Equality that empowers people who have experienced family and/or sexual violence, by providing them with a platform to become agents of change through media advocacy, public speaking, and other forms of impactful advocacy to prevent gender-based violence.
This project will produce a professionally published book featuring 25 personal stories from victim-survivors of family and sexual violence, accompanied by original artwork and photography. Each story is strength-based and explores the journeys of victim-survivors after they leave/escape family and/or sexual violence.
Governed by an advisory committee of Tasmanian victim-survivors, the project ensures integrity and lived experience leadership. Through storytelling and art, it validates lived experience, fosters connection, and promotes advocacy. Developed through a trauma-informed creative process, the book will serve as a healing, advocacy, and educational tool for individuals, services, and the wider community, offering hope and solidarity to people impacted by family violence.
Project Outcomes
Measurable outcomes include publishing 20–25 survivor stories, engaging victim-survivors through creative workshops, and distributing 150+ copies to services and allies. Impact will be tracked through participant surveys, traditional media and social media engagement, website reach, and follow-up surveys measuring connection, empowerment, and shifts in community understanding of violence.
All our work, including this project, is rooted in Tasmania and shaped by local victim-survivors’ lived experiences. Guided by an advisory committee of Tasmanian victim-survivors, it ensures integrity and keeps survivor voices central. Local artists co-create illustrations and photography, embedding it in the community. The book fosters safety, empathy, and understanding, serving as both a therapeutic resource and a catalyst for local awareness and change.
