Indigo Foundation was established in 2000 by a small group of experienced development professionals who wanted to practice community development in a way that was community-led, grounded in long-term relationships with community partners and built the capacity of local grassroots organisations. Indigo Foundation started as a very modest organisation, volunteer-run and initially working with one partner. Over time, our portfolio of partners, our funding and our support base in Australia has grown. A number of the original founders remain involved as Partnership Coordinators and as members of Board Committees.
Our fundraising sources include donations from individuals, grants from foundations and proceeds from fundraising events and initiatives. Afghanistan is our largest program. Over the last 7 years indigo foundation has provided Afghanistan between $48-146,000 per annum.
Project Summary
The project aims to improve education access and quality for around 10,000 boys and girls in a network of 50 education centers that include 40 primary and secondary schools and 10 local mosques.
During the Afghan Republic (2003-2021), we supported the local Shura to build buildings for 16 of these public schools and provide desks, chairs, and drinking water for 25 schools. Consequently, girl’s school attendance rate increased from around 10% in 2004 to nearly 40% and more than 1,000 students from our local partners communities graduated from tertiary education institutions. Some of the university graduates currently work as teachers and principals in their local schools. Since the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021, UNICEF has maintained its leading role to provide salary for most teachers in Afghanistan’s schools including to most teachers in our partner communities in the past two years. This followed sanction exemptions in 2021 and 2022 that allowed UN agencies and international NGOs like us to support education and health sectors in Afghanistan alongside the humanitarian relief programs. Accordingly, we have also reduced our support for school infrastructure activities such as new school buildings but expanded our other education programs such as support for teachers, school learning materials, and drinking water from 25 schools to 50 education centers in the past two years.
With this proposed project, we aim to support the local Shura to continue to employ 40 male and female teachers this year to address teacher shortages in their primary and secondary schools in 2024/2025. Their primary schools (Grades 1-6) provide education for male and female students and their secondary schools (Grades 7-12) only educate male students. Despite the Taliban’s attempts to change the Afghan Republic’s curriculum and textbooks, all schools in our partner communities use the same textbooks which existed prior to the return of the Taliban regime to power and are supported by UNICEF .We will also help the local Shura with the maintenance activities in five schools; learning materials (i.e. around 2,000 school textbooks and stationary equipment) in 10 schools and mosques; safe drinking water in 3 schools; and two-years stipend/scholarships for 10 girls from our local partners to study midwifery and nursing diplomas. Recently, the Taliban have permitted girls and women to study nursing and midwifery diplomas.
Project Outcomes
'- Improve access and quality of education for around 10,000 girls and boys who are enrolled in 40 primary and secondary schools by addressing teacher shortages and providing learning materials like textbooks and stationery equipment;
- Promote and enhance women’s rights to education through supporting female teachers and students in primary schools and informal mosque education;
- Improve school safety by supporting building maintenance activities;
- Promoting and improving students’ health through access to safe drinking water in three schools;
- Supporting informal social spaces like mosque education for girls above Grade 6;
- Support basic livelihood and improve economic wellbeing of 50 male and female teachers and their families; and,
- Enhance the social capacity of local Council to initiate, plan and manage diverse and complex education programs in a challenging socio-political environment.
