ANZ’s financing of fossil fuels & the Pacific

Target Population
- Women and girls
- General population

ActionAid Australia is a global women’s rights organisation working in over 70 countries to advance gender equality and global justice. At the heart of ActionAid’s strategy, Women’s Leadership for Climate Justice, is a dual approach to change.
We support women on the frontlines of climate injustice to lead transformative solutions to the challenges they face. In Australia, we campaign to advance climate justice for women – amplifying Pacific women’s demands and targeting the unjust systems that are fueling the climate crisis and gender inequality. Our campaigns focus on stopping Australia's continued financing of fossil fuels and increasing Australia’s funding for locally-led climate solutions in the Pacific.
More than 70,000 Australians support ActionAid’s work in Australia and over one million people have taken action as part of our global climate justice campaigns. ActionAid Australia has a proven track record in blocking public financing of fossil fuel projects and achieving increases in Australia's funding for climate finance and loss and damage to support communities to adapt and respond to climate change. We've also shifted Australian corporate policies in support of women’s rights, including in their global supply chains.
Project Summary
ActionAid Australia launched the campaign A Fossil Free Feminist Future in 2024 as part of a global ActionAid effort to get money out of the causes of climate change and into the solutions. We are campaigning locally and globally to stop Australian and international banks from financing fossil fuels.
ANZ is the largest funder of fossil fuels out of all Australian banks. Since the landmark Paris Agreement was signed in 2016, ANZ has directed $20 billion to climate wrecking fossil fuel companies.
Women are disproportionately impacted by fossil fuel extraction and the impacts of global heating. Across the Pacific, women are facing the daily realities of global heating – more frequent and severe cyclones, escalating floods and droughts. Climate change is undermining women’s livelihoods, increasing gender-based violence and pushing women further into poverty and insecurity.
ANZ has a strong presence in the Pacific region, with banks in 9 Pacific Island Countries. While ANZ is not directly funding fossil fuel projects in the Pacific, its continued financing of fossil fuels is driving devastating climate impacts for women across the region.
This campaign will draw attention to the links between ANZ’s presence in the Pacific region and its responsibility to act as a good climate citizen. By elevating Pacific women’s voices and demands the campaign will build the case that ANZ must stop financing fossil fuels in order to maintain its social license to operate in the Pacific region.
Project Outcomes
Key campaign outcomes will include:
- The development of case studies from women in Pacific Island countries where ANZ has a presence, which elevate their experiences of climate change and demands to ANZ and fossil fuel financiers.
- At least one Pacific woman joins with ActionAid to attend ANZ’s next annual general meeting to share their experiences of climate change and their demands for ANZ to stop financing fossil fuels.
-Advocacy meetings held with ANZ decision-makers highlighting the reputational risk in the Pacific from their ongoing funding for fossil fuels.
- A public campaign builds the pressure on ANZ to tighten loopholes in their policies to prevent financing of fossil fuels.
