For the Love of Dogs Academy
Building our academy

GOAL
$65,000
Field of Interest
- Education/training and employment
- Individual/family services and support
Target Population
- People with a disability, illness or disease
- Professional workforce

Our mission is to make the healing power of dogs accessible to everyone. Our work has commenced with participants aged 18 – 30 living with disabilities, and will ultimately expand out to all marginalised community members who can’t access pet ownership themselves, but would benefit from the many physical, mental, and social wellbeing perks of spending time with dogs.
We have 3 programs to facilitate this:
1. Pat and Chat, where our participants spend time doing social activities in a doggy day care setting;
2. Animal advocate training: We provide training in safe animal handling and employments skills, then support our graduates into roles in the animal care sector;
3. Vet team training: We provide support through certificate IV in veterinary nursing (or studying veterinary medicine for the candidates interested in this) and support graduates in employment in veterinary environments.
The animal care sector has the lowest reported rate of disability inclusion, though one of the highest rates undisclosed or undiagnosed disability. There is also dramatically increased rates of mental illness in workers in this sector relative to others. By supporting our graduates into employment in this sector, we create safety, language, and tools to accomodate differing needs, ultimately benefiting everyone on the team.
Project Summary
We have been offered a doggy daycare and grooming facility to use as a training academy. This is an existing business which has loyal clientele and a team keen to stay on board and work with For the Love of Dogs. We would be take over the lease and start running the business from 1st June, with all proceeds going to maintain our training programs, making them self sustaining.
To make the space accessible and optimise our opportunities to provide training, we need to divide the open warehouse space into smaller spaces (classrooms) for sound proofing, install ramps, and modify the bathroom areas.
We plan to create a designated grooming area, dog training area, and vet clinic spaces with consultation on accessible design. The veterinary aspect of the business will be managed by our veterinary partner, “The Vet’s North”.
Project Outcomes
The goal is to create a facility where all participants can try out all roles within the animal care sector, knowing that their needs will be accommodated without the additional mental load and inconsistency of going into multiple facilities. We are hoping to have fit out completed within one year, and as a result have 30 participants benefiting from our programs daily (150 per week!).
