Bright United Men’s Shed (BUMS Inc.) was founded with the support of Alpine Health, the Alpine Shire, and local businesses to provide a space focused on men’s well-being. BUMS Inc. is part of the national Men’s Shed initiative, which has grown to over 600 sheds across Australia and is expanding globally. At Bright United Men’s Shed (BUMS), we believe in the power of purpose, connection and community. More than just a workshop, BUMS is a welcoming space where men of all ages and backgrounds come together to build, share skills, and support one another. Whether it’s creating timber projects, lending a hand on community builds, or simply having a cuppa and a chat, every day at the Shed is an opportunity to improve wellbeing, learn something new, and feel part of something meaningful. We're proud to play a vital role in the Bright community—fostering mateship, mental health, and a strong sense of belonging.

Project Summary

The Bright United Men’s Shed is seeking to engage a qualified building designer or architect to prepare concept and detailed design documentation that will address critical building compliance issues identified through a recent inspection. The facility, originally classified as a Class 8a building, now requires reclassification to Class 9b under the National Construction Code due to its expanded community use. This reclassification triggers significant compliance obligations, including accessibility, fire safety, and structural requirements.

The project involves site investigation, stakeholder consultation, and the preparation of drawings and reports necessary to support planning and building permit applications. The resulting documentation will enable the Shed to proceed with staged construction works, support future funding applications, and ensure the facility can continue to operate safely and legally as a vital community asset.

Project Outcomes

The project is expected to deliver the following outcomes: production of concept and detailed design plans that meet the requirements of the National Construction Code for a Class 9b building; resolution of current building non-compliance issues, including unpermitted works and change-of-use requirements identified in the Building Notice; preparation of a complete design package suitable for planning and building permit applications, with coordination of relevant sub-consultants such as engineers and building surveyors; provision of documentation to support accurate cost estimation and potential staged construction; inclusion of design features that enhance safety, accessibility, and functionality; and development of a compliant, future-ready facility that enables the continued and expanded operation of the Bright United Men’s Shed as a vital community resource.
