OzChild is a leading child welfare organisation committed to improving the lives of vulnerable and at-risk children, young people and families in our community. For nearly 170 years, OzChild has worked hard to provide a better future for those in our care with the belief that every child and young person deserves the chance to shine.
OzChild was one of the first not-for-profit organisations to introduce evidence-based programs to Australia and have a proven record of working collaboratively with government to allocate investment in innovative solutions to achieve better outcomes for vulnerable children and young people.
OzChild is focused on providing support for children and young people (CYP) in foster or kinship care and keeping families together where possible through the delivery of evidence-based programs and evidenced-informed services aimed at strengthening and repairing relationships, and diverting CYP from out-of-home care (OOHC).
Project Summary
The purpose of the Chance to Shine Scholarship is to provide individual funding opportunities for OzChild children and young people aged 5-18 years. The program supports those who are experiencing challenges and/or disadvantages that impact education and participation in artistic, sporting, cultural or community activities.
With the cost of living affecting many Australian households, at-risk children and young people have become increasingly vulnerable. With the help of the Chance to Shine Scholarship, much-needed financial support will now be available to those students who need it most. Applications will be reviewed monthly between 15-20th of each month. Applications received after the 15th of the month will fall into the following month’s review.
Thanks to the generosity of our philanthropic partners, OzChild can support children and young people through the Chance to Shine Scholarship program.
What can the funds be used for?
The scholarship can help cover the costs of essential items used for learning. This can include but is not limited to the following:
-School uniforms.
-Textbooks and resources.
-Technology such as iPads, iPhones or laptops.
-Transport costs.
-Tutoring costs.
-School excursions.
-Sporting equipment.
-Performing arts lessons or classes.
-Cultural participation.
Project Outcomes
The purpose of Chance to Shine is fundamentally equitable. Chance to Shine provides scholarships to the vulnerable/disadvantaged CYP supported by our foster/kinship care and prevention and family strengthening programs.
The scholarships provide individual funding opportunities for OzChild CYP who are experiencing challenges and/or disadvantage which impact their educational progression and participation.
It is accepted that education can be a pathway out of poverty. According to UNESCO, if all adults completed secondary education, we could cut the global poverty rate by more than half; this is why the United Nations named quality education one of its Sustainable Development Goals to achieve by 2030.
Many children who come into an OzChild program, either through foster or kinship care or those at risk of entering out-of-home care, also experience financial disadvantage which in turn can be a barrier to a fulsome participation in learning and community engagement.
To help promote continued engagement in education and community activity for CYP in our care, OzChild established the Chance to Shine scholarship program. A Chance to Shine scholarship can help a young person have the same opportunities as everyone else, levelling the playing field.
