St John is a charity that supports Victorians through emergencies, disasters and sickness. We keep communities safe and help create safer communities. We provide First Aid and First Aid training that saves lives; we act as first responders at sporting, community, and entertainment events; and we transport vulnerable members of the community between their home, hospital, and health care providers.

We employ around 500 people and have more than 2000 volunteers who provide First Aid and teach First Aid in schools and the community, and transport vulnerable members of the community.
As a charity, we self-fund our life-saving community initiatives and programs through philanthropic support, some fee-for-service activities, training, and sales of First Aid kits and products.

Every year, 380,000 Victorians utilise our services – whether it be our transport services, First Aid care, or First Aid training. This is in addition to the 13 million people whose health we oversee at sporting, community, and entertainment events across the state each year.

St John has provided specialised First Aid training and resources for 141 years and started the very first ambulance service in Melbourne in 1883.

Our Purpose: for the service of humanity
Our Vision: more lives saved, exceptional care and greater resilience in communities
Our Mission: to lead Victoria in first aid and medical responses to community healthcare needs

Project Summary

The St John CPR Lab is an exciting way to help people learn and improve their lifesaving skills for free.

CPR Lab’s 10-minute interactive sessions bring the learning of basic CPR to life – making it easier than ever to learn what to do in a sudden cardiac arrest emergency.

The vehicle is equipped with computer-connected manikins to provide immediate feedback on individual CPR techniques. CPR Lab provides an exciting way to help people learn and improve their lifesaving skills for free, and in the comfort of their own community.

Through the attendance at public events such as festivals, markets, school fetes and more, we aim to engage the wider Victorian community to engage with hands-on practice to increase their skills and knowledge of CPR and cardiac arrest, thus resulting in increased confidence to respond in an emergency with CPR before Paramedics arrive on the scene.

We aim to refit the interior of the CPR Lab vehicle to enhance our program delivery in the community. The vehicles’ current battery system is old and unreliable, meaning the vehicle is sometimes rendered unavailable for events and community activities. The ability to add two more batteries and a 3000 watt inverter and solar panels would enable us to operate the CPR Lab ‘off grid’ increasing the reach of our program in the Victorian community.

Project Outcomes

Over 7,500 Victorians suffer cardiac arrest each year – a figure that has been steadily increasing over the last decade. Unfortunately, less than 5% of patients survive. However, when high quality bystander CPR is introduced, the survival rate doubles to 11%.

To build resilience in our community and help improve survival rates, St John has developed CPR Lab – an innovative, fun, interactive program, that fills a gap in community First Aid and CPR education. We know that some community members are less likely to access formal accreditation due to several factors: including cost, time, location, cultural beliefs, and high stigma surrounding CPR.

Being able to improve the functionality and capability of our current CPR Lab vehicle will mean we can provide this free community education program to more Victorians.
At St John, we strongly believe, and are committed to ensuring that all Victorians will have reasonable and equitable access to training and knowledge around First Aid and CPR.
