Project Summary
Victorian Opera is proud to announce an exciting expansion of its Emerging Artist Opera Prize in 2026. Traditionally awarded to one rising star annually, this prestigious salaried position offers a rare opportunity for an emerging artist to fully immerse themselves in the professional world of opera.
In response to an exceptional pool of talent, Victorian Opera will aim to award not one, but two Opera Prize scholarships in 2026. To make this possible, the Company is inviting seven donors to join an Opera Prize Syndicate, each contributing $10,000 to support the second recipient.
Recipients will receive:
- Mainstage performance roles with Victorian Opera.
- Private coaching from the Artistic Director and music staff.
- Mentoring in business acumen, including contract negotiation, financial literacy, and self-promotion.
- Career management guidance, helping artists navigate the industry with confidence.
- Network development support, connecting recipients with key figures in the operatic and performing arts community.
- Residency with the company, fostering artistic growth and professional experience.
This initiative empowers emerging artists not only to perform, but to give them the tools to reach their full potential on and off the stage, while syndicate members are helping shape the stage of opera in Australia.
Project Outcomes
Victorian Opera’s goal with the expanded Emerging Artist Opera Prize is to identify, nurture, and launch the careers of Australia’s most promising operatic talent. By offering not just performance opportunities but also mentoring in business acumen, career management, and network development, we aim to equip artists with the tools to thrive both artistically and professionally.
We’re not just creating performers—we seek to cultivate future leaders in opera who are resilient, entrepreneurial, and connected to the industry.
How We’ll Know We’ve Achieved It
Success will be measured through:
- Artistic Growth: Recipients demonstrate significant development in vocal technique, stagecraft, and interpretive skills.
- Professional Engagement: Prize recipients secure roles with major opera companies, festivals, or ensembles following their residency.
- Career Sustainability: Artists show increased confidence in managing their careers—booking work, negotiating contracts, and building their brand.
- Industry Recognition: Feedback from mentors, collaborators, and audiences affirms the impact of the Prize on the artist’s trajectory.
- Network Expansion: Recipients build meaningful connections within the opera community, leading to new collaborations and opportunities.
Ultimately, we’ll know we’ve succeeded when our recipients are no longer just emerging—they’re established, empowered, and inspiring others.
