Junction 142 aims to improve the health and physical wellbeing of people in the Blue Mountains area, including: - supporting the local community in providing relief to the homeless and those who experience misfortune. - distributing food and hot meals and assistance on a regular basis to those in need, and - providing welfare and social justice to those in need.

This is achieved by providing the following free services:
- Open Table: Hot meals served in the Hall Tuesday & Thursday. Food supplies are available for people to take home on these days. Meals are served to around 40 people each sitting with more attending to collect food hampers.
- Laundry & Shower service four days/wk: Free access to full bathroom and laundry (washers/dryers). In 2022 to 2023 there were744 uses of shower, 1834 loads of washing and 1611 items of clothing, toiletries and bedding given out.
- Locker Service: Providing 24hr access for the homeless to store their belongings.

Services are funded by donations and hire of the heritage listed Church and Hall. Op Shop and Village Market operate 3 days/wk contributing to welfare services. Blue Mountains Community Support Hub (initiated by LinkWentworth Housing) operates from Junction 142 monthly as a 'one-stop-shop' for 15 govt/community agencies for the community.

Project Summary

Junction 142’s heritage listed Cottage (built 1906) has not been fully usable for many years. Junction 142 has formed an alliance with Gateway Family Services who is contracted by NSW DCJ to provide Parent/Carer and child support but desperately needs a new premises.

Our Cottage is the perfect location in the heart of Katoomba. But, the large, enclosed veranda requires a total upgrade to accommodate a separate entrance, bathroom, kitchenette and additional counselling room. A child play area in the garden will also be created with fencing to separate usage. This will provide separation for their clients from the homeless services Junction 142 operate from this location, ensuring safety and perception of safety at all times for children. Junction 142 provide regular hot meals, food hampers, clothing, bedding and referral support to other services. We also run our free shower and laundry service out of the back of the Cottage 4 days/wd.

Veranda requires new entrance from Church Lane, new flooring, roofing, internal walls and additional bathroom which will complement the main connected rooms in the Cottage which have been upgraded some time ago and ready for use.

Junction 142 has decided to undertake the upgrade to provide a sustainable income to support the on-going work of Junction 142. Partnering with GFS is a win-win as we can provide a new ‘home’ for their services and expand services to the boarder community of Blue Mountains.

With potential funding support, this project will allow us to increase self-sustainability.

Project Outcomes

Junction 142 has supported the most vulnerable people in our community for many years, including the homeless. Completing the upgrade to our heritage listed Cottage will make it fully usable, allowing Junction 142 to support other services and create a sustainable income to help fund our services into the future. Junction 142 is run by a dedicated group of over 30 volunteers and relies mainly on donations. We receive no ongoing government funding.

By completing the upgrades to the Cottage, we can offer suitable space to Gateway Family Service that urgently need a new location to provide family and child support. Currently they have 50+ clients in the Katoomba area.

By relocate counselling and therapy services to Junction 142 in the heart of Katoomba, close to transport and shops, the number of families accessing support is anticipated to increase. Parent/carer counselling sessions, child art and play therapy will run regularly and the building allows for potential expansion of programs.

The Cottage will ensure community services will continue and have the ability to expand in the upper Blue Mountains into the future.
