The Alliance for Gambling Reform is a national advocacy organisation working to reduce gambling harm in Australia. We partner with other organisations and with local councils to reduce the alarming level of gambling harm in Australia, we work to change the laws and rules governing the gambling industry.
We do not seek to ban gambling. Rather we seek to influence government to minimise the harmful behaviours of the gambling industry and to give voice to those who are impacted by gambling harm.
We are a registered health promotion charity and are funded by donations and grants from individuals, foundations, trusts, local government and other sources that do not have ties to the gambling industry. We are not affiliated with any political party.
For the past 10 years The Alliance for Gambling Reform has advocated for public health reforms that are evidence-based and community-backed with the sole purpose of reducing and preventing gambling harm in Australia. Online gambling is increasingly becoming one of the biggest health issues we are facing as a country.
Project Summary
The Alliance for Gambling Reform is currently in the fight of its life to convince the Australian Government to ban online gambling ads and implement a raft of other reforms that were recommended in the Murphy Report – You Win Some, You Lose More, which followed a parliamentary inquiry into online gambling over 18 months ago.
The report was given to the Australian Government in July 2023, with multi-party support by all the committee members, but to date, there has been no response from government. With Australians losing almost $32 billion to gambling every year, its impact is felt not only through financial loss but also health and mental health issues. It exacerbates domestic violence, and research shows that up to one in five suicides in Australia could be linked to gambling.
The Alliance’s campaign to convince the Australian Government to ban online gambling ads and to adopt generational gambling reforms has drawn in more than 80 organisations and local councils, many high-profile Australians, and has been instrumental in putting this issue on the federal political agenda in the lead-up to the 2025 election.
“We are on the verge of generational reform. Your continued financial backing will be pivotal to help us get real and lasting gambling reform in Australia.” Tim Costello, Chief Advocate
Project Outcomes
What we want to achieve:
That the Government of the day deliver on all 31 recommendations of the Murphy Report, including:
- A total ad ban
- Treating gambling harm as a health issue
- Creating a national regulator
Our campaign will:
- Increase direct political pressure on the two major parties to publicly back reform
- Launch a campaign for MPs across the country to pledge their support to ban gambling ads
- Boost media and social media awareness of the impact of gambling by using new research
- Pressure Government and Opposition leaders to speak out publicly
- Expand our campaign against online gambling in footy during the AFL and NRL 2025 seasons
- Focus on the impact that gambling has on families, how it exacerbates family violence, and how the gambling industry targets vulnerable groups (including children) through targeted advertising.
Why support this campaign?
Gambling harm is a massive public health issue, linked to poor physical and mental health, poverty and homelessness, criminal activity, family violence, and suicide. Australians lose over $32 billion each year to gambling, the highest per capita spend in the world.
These losses are disproportionately experienced by the people who can least afford it – people living with financial and other forms of stress, as well as people with mental health issues and addiction problems.
