Foodbank is Australia’s largest and most trusted hunger relief organisation and Foodbank NSW & ACT was the first Foodbank to open in Sydney in 1992.
Our vision is that everyone has access to the food and grocery items they need. Our mission is to deliver essential food and household items to people in times of need.
Our objectives ensure we work “paddock to plate” which means we partner with the food and grocery industry, including farmers, wholesalers, manufacturers and retailers, to source food and capture donations saved from landfill. We also collaborate with suppliers, manufacturers and transporters to produce key staple foods that don’t come in sufficient quantities via rescue channels.
To distribute the food to frontline charities, community groups and schools that provide food relief within their communities, our teams work with an army of volunteers to pick, pack and transport the food to where it’s needed.
Our core business activity includes:
• Pantry – supplying frontline food relief charities/community organisations with staple items, fresh food and produce
• School Breakfast 4 Health – supporting schools to provide breakfast to children
• Major emergency response – providing emergency food hampers and other supplies.
Last financial year, Foodbank NSW & ACT (FBNA) distributed the equivalent of 22,039,000 meals (12,244,000 kilograms of food/grocery items) to NSW & ACT community partners and schools. Including 48,558 ready-made hampers of both food and personal care items and provided 725 primary and high schools with our School Breakfast 4 Health program, which increased by 17.5%.

Project Summary

According to the 2024 Foodbank Hunger Report, we know that 1 in 3 households in NSW & ACT are still going hungry, this equates to 1 million food insecure households. There are 26,154 households in Wagga Wagga (https://profile.id.com.au/wagga-wagga/households) and we can assume that 8,718 of those households are going hungry.

Over the past 12 months, the ‘cost-of-living’ crisis combined with supply chain issues and shortages have made it increasingly difficult for Foodbank to secure the level of donated food products needed to meet the growing demand for food relief in the community. Donated food can be more ‘surprise chain’ than ‘supply chain’ and regular volumes cannot be relied on to ensure a consistent supply of the everyday essentials.

One of our community partners reported…“Things are getting desperate. More and more people in our community are in need. We have already been struggling to keep up and we know it’s getting worse by the day. Food has always been a discretionary spend when you don’t have money, but now even the basics are becoming such a luxury.”

Food is not just essential to physical health and wellbeing. It is also about how we connect as individuals, families, and members of a wider community. It is fundamental to the way that we interact and care for each other, in fact it is a part of our culture and identity. Support of $15,000 will enable us to purchase and deliver essential food relief to provide more than 30,000 meals for families going hungry.
