Project Summary

In January 2025, the Queensland government put an immediate pause on new trans patients under the age of 18 from accessing hormone therapies in the state’s public health system. The government also announced a review into the evidence for hormone treatments for children with gender dysphoria. New patients under the age of 18 won’t be able to access hormone treatments in the state’s public health system until the government considers the findings of the review which will be catastrophic for young trans people and their families.

Gender affirming care, like puberty blockers and hormones, is life-changing and life-saving healthcare for trans youth. The banning of this vital care is a politically motivated attack that will have devastating consequences.

Spokespeople from medical and human rights bodies have already come out opposing the ban, including the Australian Medical Association Queensland, senior members of the Royal College of General Practitioners, and the Australian Human Rights Commission.

This issue affects all of us. Governments cannot be allowed to ban vital, evidence-based healthcare solely on the basis of their political beliefs.

Project Outcomes

Funding will be used to advocate for reversing the ban on hormone therapies for trans youth.
