South Port Community Housing Group South Port Community Housing Group

South Port Community Housing Group (SPCHG) was formed by community initiative in 1983 to provide long-term, secure, affordable rental housing. We are proudly community focused and maintain high standards of accountability, transparency, and ethics in everything we do. Our point of difference is our approach. We deliver sensitive and compassionate tenancy management and support, quality housing, and a sense of community to single adults who are homeless or in housing crisis. We reach a wide range of people who have experienced homelessness and social exclusion in the Port Phillip, Stonnington and Glen Eira municipalities.

Priority allocation of housing is given to people in their local area to help retain important networks of support and connections to their community. We currently manage over 380 tenancies. Around 38 per cent of our renters are on a Disability Support Pension, 15 per cent on the Age Pension, and 38 per cent on a JobSeeker income payment. In the last decade we have created more than 100 new affordable unit homes exclusively for marginalised singles in greatest need.

In FY 2023, we supported 91 young people who were homeless or facing homelessness with tailored and intensive case-managed support. We have professionally trained and considerate youth support workers, and we partner with key agencies to ensure all our renters have access to good specialist health and other support services. We encourage building a sense of community based on personal relationships between staff, Board, renters and neighbours.

Project Summary

SPCHG maintains that housing is a human right. For over 40 years SPCHG has provided long term, safe and secure housing to people in need within their local community.  We have perfected our model and in 2024-25 we are determined to build our capacity to reach the growing number of homeless people in our communities in the State of Victoria.

Our housing team includes people with specific skills in social work and community development, as well as tenancy and property administration. While we are collaborating with our partners to create more rental units, it is essential that this initiative includes building our specialist team.

As we expand our reach it is crucial to our model that our staff continue to monitor the welfare of tenants, identify support needs as they arise, and ensure that our new long-term renters will be effectively linked into the range of local support services and resources they require. To achieve all this, we need funding from community to help community.

Project Outcomes

By EFY 2025, this support will enable our tenancy growth, providing greater numbers of homeless people with the opportunity to have a long term rental home, to be matched with our team’s capacity to maintain our focused case management of complex tenancies and to streamline registration and reporting requirements
