Country Needs People
The Country Needs People campaign is a growing group of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians calling on decision-makers to:
- Double funding for Indigenous rangers and Indigenous Protected Areas;
- Commit to longer-term funding for Indigenous rangers and Indigenous Protected Areas; and
- Support a long-term national target of 5,000 Indigenous land and sea management jobs.
Country Needs People is not-for-profit, nonpartisan and works with all sides of politics for a positive outcome. The campaign is a growing alliance of over 41 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander land and sea management organisations, Country Needs People Ltd and over 100,000 Australians.
Project Summary
The Country Needs People campaign fights for the growth and security of opportunities for land and sea country management by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The campaign works carefully to continually empower and foreground grassroots Indigenous land and sea managers as primary spokespeople for land and sea management, and identifies and highlights the many strengths that Indigenous Australians bring to a sector that benefits themselves, their communities and the wider Australian public.
Now comprising over 40 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander land and sea management groups, the campaign continues to provide jobs in remote communities and increase sector resilience, improving the prospect of lasting and effective environmental change through land and sea management.
Project Outcomes
In 2017, the Impact Fund provided $150,000 Country Needs People to create an ‘advocacy travel fund’ to get Indigenous rangers to Canberra and decision-makers out to managed lands, and to support Indigenous women rangers’ leadership and role in land and sea management.
Since then, the campaign has secured 30 million hectares of new Indigenous Protected Areas under development, and over $700 million in federal funding to support Indigenous rangers until 2028 ($102 million annually, indexed per year to 2027). Country Needs People is now an independent organisation, not just a campaign.
