FNPW safeguards Australia’s most precious natural assets, creating thriving habitats and setting a global benchmark for conservation excellence. Through transformative partnerships and funding, we expand protected areas, save endangered species, and empower First Nations communities to lead in the care of country.
We aim to be Australia’s best environmental partner, working on the highest priority projects. We createthe environment for nature to thrive.
Project Summary
The Landscape Resilience program is a keystone FNPW program theme delivering ecological and biodiversity restoration outcomes across Australia. One component of the program is Fire Wise.
The Fire Wise program was initiated to improve, share, test and demonstrate our understanding of how numerous species of indigenous (local native) plants, can be retained or planted in strategic locations around the built environment/infrastructure and urban landscapes, to better protect our assets from bushfire and enhance our local biodiversity. In particular, the use of such plants reduces the risk of bushfire and ember attack during wildfire events. This is achieved by vegetation assisting in slowing wind speed, absorbing embers, maintaining soil moisture, and acting a barrier to life threatening radiant heat.
Communities are investigating appropriate plant species with low flammability and planting methodologies, undertaking local seed collection, propagating of local provenance plant species, planting of living seed banks, and establishing demonstration sites and revegetation projects on public and together with landholders on private land. The program is currently delivered and supported by 14 organisations across NSW, VIC and South Aust with plant species propagated at 11 nurseries with seedbanks.
The first stage of the Fire Wise Program will be completed by the end of March 2025. FNPW is currently looking for partners for Stage 2.
Project Outcomes
A total of 40,000 plants planted are to be planted across a minimum of 48 demonstration sites. The program currently works with 8 First Nations peoples.
The program will look at expanding its application with a focus on the following:
- Roll out focused community media campaign and available information
- Expand program principles to new regional geographic areas at risk of bushfire to identify appropriate plant species (e.g. temperate woodlands of inland NSW and Victoria)
- Undertaking further scientific reviews and validation of identified plant species
- Working with government (state, local) to investigate the use of Fire Wise planting as a solution to reducing fire risk, whilst providing habitat, in and around sustainable energy infrastructure development and easements.
- Work with development companies and local councils to expand the use of Fire Wise planting into new development estates and urban landscapes to reduce fire risks and enhance habitat for native species.
- Undertake major new demonstration site using Fire Wise plantings at Glenthorne National Park and Field River Conservation Park in Adelaide, South Australia, as part of landscape restoration activities that fringe urban communities.
- Expanding site planting with additional corporate volunteering opportunities made available.
