Vision
Friends for Good: People free from loneliness.
Mission
Friends for Good raises awareness of loneliness as a significant issue in the community and addresses gaps in services to foster a greater sense of connection and wellbeing for individuals and communities.
Friends for Good is an Australian loneliness pioneer being the first organisation to focus solely on addressing loneliness and social isolation. We have a large pool of trained volunteers and many experts and probono partners who assist us to develop and implement project ideas and initiatives. FFG provides services, including FriendLine, a telephone support line to offer friendship to people experiencing loneliness, MateLine for veterans and ArabicLine for Arabic speakers. 98% of people using these services are feeling less lonely after regularly speaking with one of our trained volunteers. FFG provides an on-line chat service for people who would rather use this medium, it is targeted to young people. We have opportunities for in person engagement through walking groups and community events, including intergenerational activities. Through the establishment of a research foundation we work with leading universities, as well as other not-for-profit organisations, to conduct research that is informed by the people at the grassroots experiencing loneliness. We also provide education and training, including hosting symposiums and conferences where we work to break down the stigma surrounding loneliness.

Project Summary

MateLine is a new service for veterans in Australia. Ex-service personnel are at a high risk of experiencing loneliness and being isolated as they transition to civilian life. In addition many have experienced trauma that leads to poor mental health outcomes. MateLine offers a free, anonymous chat with a friendly volunteer and aims to alleviate loneliness. It also provides referrals to other services or community based activities to assist ex-service personnel to make more connections in their local community, if desired. MateLine is based on the model of FriendLine which has been shown to be extremely effective in reducing loneliness.

Volunteers have been trained and orientated to provide MateLine with the assistance of specialist supervisors. Marketing and promotion of the service is required in order to work with service clubs and the veteran community more broadly to build awareness of the service offering and encourage veterans to reach out for support if they are experiencing loneliness and social isolation.

Funding would be used to develop promotional materials and for a project worker to advertise and market the service through traditional and social media, as well as existing support and social services.

Project Outcomes

Many Ex-service personnel will be aware of the MateLine service and using it for support and friendship. We anticipate that at least 100 additional veterans will have registered for the service and be provided with regular telephone chats.

Evaluations of all services are conducted annually and we anticipate that the results of the Mateline survey will be that 98% of regular callers are happy with the service and 90% will be feeling less lonely after speaking regularly with a trained volunteer.
