Foundation for Australia's Most Endangered Species Ltd (FAME) Foundation for Australia's Most Endangered Species Ltd (FAME)

FAME is an Australian organisation, established in 1993, dedicated to helping Australian species most at risk of extinction. FAME identifies and funds conservation projects which include innovative conservation initiatives, species protection in-situ, translocating species, revegetation and protection of habitat and building robust populations behind fences with the long-term strategy of rewilding. FAME often sees the potential in such projects and provides initial financial support.

Once a project is identified, we provide financial, compliance, regulatory and conservation oversight allowing our on-ground partners to focus on the task at hand, Australian wildlife conservation, without the added pressure of determining funding sources for on-ground activities and ongoing governance and compliance. Often FAME’s role acts as a catalyst to direct more attention to a project, which then attracts larger funding for the species and/or on-ground partner’s work.

We find conservation efforts in Australia appear to work best when there is a confluence, or joining up, between a species in need or depleted habitat and individuals or organisations with an ability to commit to, and deliver, the necessary plan for success. FAME’s solid track record has much of its genesis with like-minded capable organisations. With our partners, we fill an important, vital niche in the conservation ecosystem.

Along with a highly engaged and experienced board and leadership, the knowledge gained from working on over 70 conservation projects has built our financial capacity, scientific understanding and practical experience. We have become experts in knowing and identifying the critical success factors needed to help a species survive.

Project Summary

The Enrichment Program is a long-term focused effort to continue converting newly planted forests into a rainforest by manually adding species to the understorey and forest floor to strengthen their ecosystems.

This involves identifying key areas though polygon mapping and aerial and ground observation of areas which require further planting in order to prosper; with a goal of planting 12,000 various rainforest trees each year for three years. This ambitious project will improve structure and species diversity, including many endangered species, for high quality reforestation within Northern NSW.

Rainforests are one of the most biodiverse and vital ecosystems on the planet providing a wide array of benefits to not only the environment but also to humans within the global ecosystem. Rainforests absorb carbon and in turn play a significant role in their contribution to global oxygen levels as well as helping to regulate local and regional climates through transpiration and evaporation processes.

This project will not only plant trees, but inevitably provide habitat for more than 50 species of wildlife, many of which are endangered or threatened with extinction, as well as assist with protecting soil erosion and fertility through the development of dense vegetation.

Project Outcomes

The overarching objective of this project is the re-creation of real and complex ecosystems that can support vulnerable and critically endangered species with the necessary rainforest system and structure.

By identifying key areas through polygon mapping and aerial and ground observation of areas which require further planting in order to prosper we will plant 12,000 various rainforest trees, each year for three years. This ambitious project will improve structure and species diversity, including many endangered species, for high quality reforestation within Northern NSW.

Not only will the Enrichment Program plant trees but also aims to, and will inevitably, provide habitat for vast arrays of wildlife species, many of which are endangered or threatened with extinction, as well as assist with protecting soil erosion and fertility through the development of dense vegetation.
