Kidney Support Network (KSN) is a not-for-profit organisation providing a selection of services to persons residing in Queensland who are living with kidney disease. Our mission is to raise awareness about the disease while supporting those already living with it. KSN operates in Mackay, Sunshine Coast, North Brisbane, Moreton Bay and Gladstone. Services include a transport service to and from hospital for dialysing clients, hospital visitations from our support groups, equipment and generally service of care, servicing ten hospital. The day-to-day cost of running our service is mostly funded through revenue from our 7 community Op Shops. We do not receive any government funding, heavily rely on donations, fundraising events for expenses and grants to purchase/ replace equipment. KSN not only provide support to those affected by kidney disease, we also support the wider community by offering volunteering opportunities in our op shops, support groups and as volunteer drivers supporting our transport service. We are Centrelink registered and support the physically and intellectually disadvantaged by giving opportunity to volunteer who are of senior age resulting in improved mental health and connections within the community.
Project Summary
Kidney Support Network provide a QLD approved transport service to and from hospital for renal patients to undergo dialysis/ appointments. This service operates six days per week, 6am to 9pm, all drivers are volunteers.
Kidney Support Network is the only organisation providing safe, affordable, door to door transport specifically for renal patients. Each of our eight vehicles travel on average 4000km per month to provide this service. Without this service our clients would have to take a taxi’s or rely on family for transport to and from dialysis, three times a week. Queensland Ambulance Patient Transport Service is only available for those who been assessed as being medically unsuitable for community, public or private transport.
For the service to continue to run safely our vehicles need replacement due excessive utilisation. We are seeking support to help fund the replacement of our oldest vehicle to ensure the safety of patients and volunteer drivers.
Project Outcomes
Support services for those suffering with kidney disease is limited throughout Queensland, transport being the major gap. By replacing our vehicles, we will we are able to continue to provide safe and affordable transport to over 90 renal patients three times per week.
Prior to commencing this service KSN conducted surveys with renal patients via Hospital Renal Unit to identify the need. Our transport service is rapidly growing, and will continue to expand. The new vehicle will also allow us to explore and establish a transport service in a new location that currently doesn’t have support services in place for those suffering kidney disease.
