The Waypoint Foundation is committed to both the preservation of the historic Tall Ship Alma Doepel for future generations and the development of young people through sail training programs on her. Built in Australia in 1903, Alma Doepel is Australia’s oldest wooden tall ship and is undergoing restoration which is scheduled for completion in Docklands this year or at another location early next year if full funding is not obtained this year. Youth development sail training voyages will resume next year with flagship 9-day voyages for 36 young people as well as shorter duration voyages.

The target population of these development voyages will be young people from various backgrounds with a focus on disadvantaged and ‘at-risk’ youth, young people with disability and young emerging leaders. The disadvantaged include youth with mental illness, depression and drug dependency, youth in the criminal justice system, at risk of homelessness or from a low socio-economic background. As in the past, we will obtain funding to be able to provide either part or full scholarships to enable disadvantaged young people to participate in development voyages.

During the restoration of Alma Doepel modifications will provide disability access to the ship as well as disability accommodation to enable people of all ages with disability to board and tour an historic tall ship while berthed, to participate in day sailing and overnight voyages and for young people to participate in youth development sail training multi-day voyages.

Project Summary

Built in Australia in 1903, the Tall Ship Alma Doepel is Australia’s oldest wooden tall ship and is undergoing restoration in Docklands which is scheduled for completion this year or possibly early next year. Youth development sail training voyages will resume next year with flagship 9-day voyages for 36 young people as well as shorter duration voyages of one, three or five days. During the restoration, modifications will provide disability access to the ship as well as disability accommodation.

In addition to the youth development voyages, multi-day voyages will be conducted for special interest groups such as families wanting to improve family dynamics, adults with disabilities and veterans interested in honouring Alma Doepel’s service as an Army Ketch in WW2.

Project Outcomes

The short term expected outcome of this Project is that the restoration of Alma Doepel will be completed this year to enable the resumption of youth development and special interest voyages next year.

In the longer term a key outcome is that over 600 young people per year will gain a wide range of benefits through flagship 9-day and 5-day voyages and shorter voyages of 1 to 4 days.

Tall ship youth sail training has been proven in its ability to create life changing experiences. It builds resilience, leadership, teamwork and communication skills, while boosting confidence and enabling young people to overcome adversity. These outcomes help combat youth suicide, depression, drug use and enable young people to reach their own goals and ambitions. We have documented cases where past disadvantaged voyagers’ lives were turned around and they were motivated to complete their education.

There is a clear need to assist youth experiencing mental health/depression/drug use/suicidal tendencies, juvenile offenders in the criminal justice system, and those at risk of homelessness or from a low socio-economic background. As in the past, we will obtain funding for scholarships to enable disadvantage young people to participate in development voyages.

The focus on the needs of youth with disabilities will reduce social isolation, enhance their general wellbeing and enable participation in development programs not previously available to them.
As well as these direct benefits to voyage participants, wider outcomes include improved relationships within the participant’s family and with peers at school and with teachers.
