Conservation Council of WA Conservation Council of WA

The Conservation Council of WA (CCWA) is Western Australia's peak not-for-profit, conservation and environment organisation. We have been a leading voice for conservation for more than 50 years, working directly with communities, government, Traditional Owners, industry, and media to promote a more sustainable WA and to protect our natural environment.
CCWA represents over 80 environmental organisations and thousands of individuals across the state, all dedicated to the protection and restoration of Western Australia's natural environment. Our vision is a flourishing natural environment and a safe climate valued by everyone. Our work is a unique mix of campaigns, environmental advocacy, and on-ground projects, tackling biodiversity loss, and promoting community citizen science.

Project Summary

We will lose our black cockatoos forever unless we protect the critical habitat they need to survive. Black cockatoo numbers are plummeting. All three species of these iconic Western Australian birds are on the brink of extinction.

Over the past few decades, these beloved birds have faced dramatic population declines due to relentless habitat destruction. Clearing our bushlands, woodlands, and forests destroys their food sources, nesting places and critical habitats.

The time to act is now.

The plight of the black cockatoo is urgent. We are on the verge of losing them forever. We know what is threatening them. We also know how to save the species. We need your help to build awareness, inspire action, and turn the situation around for WA’s black cockatoos.

There is real community willingness to save these birds – hundreds of volunteers are contributing to citizen science and wildlife projects. But saving the black cockatoo requires long-term, transformative change. CCWA is advocating for a new, strong Black Cockatoo Recovery Plan, to save all three threatened black cockatoo species in WA from extinction.

We encourage individuals and community groups to meet with candidates in the lead up to the election, to call on incoming politicians to commit to these priorities and deliver reformed nature laws to safeguard all threatened species and ecosystems.

Project Outcomes

CCWA is working with key member groups and partners to meet with politicians and candidates to advocate for a moratorium on clearing critical cockatoo habitat and remnant native vegetation in WA and increased funding for ecological restoration programs.

CCWA is distributing Save the Black Cockatoo yard signs to be displayed at homes and businesses to promote the campaign and influence voting choices at the next federal election. A petition will be distributed and promoted in the lead-up to the election.

Volunteers are being recruited to participate in workshops, write submissions, lobby their local MP, and support citizen science projects.

We will assess the outcomes of this campaign based on the number of yard signs distributed and evidence of their display, response from government and politicians to our requested policy changes, number of volunteers recruited, workshop attendee numbers, and member group engagement.
