‘Save the Skate’ Film and Impact Campaign

GOAL
$25,000
Field of Interest
- Environment conservation and climate change
Project Summary
Environment Tasmania is launching a film tour across Australia for its new film dedicated to the endangered Maugean skate.
This project will be utilised to raise awareness of the threats facing the Maugean skate, a ‘living dinosaur fish’, and build broad public support to help press decision-makers into taking actions that will bring this iconic species back from the brink of extinction.
The film tour will raise awareness of the skate’s plight in strategic locations across the country, encouraging communities to take action and to help increase protection for the skate, ending the harmful practices that are degrading the skate’s last remaining refuge, Macquarie Harbour.
There will be panel discussions at the film nights with the panel being made up of key scientists, politicians, First Nations people, artists and youth voices. A range of ‘take actions’ will be available for audiences to ensure their voice is being heard by decision-makers.
Project Outcomes
Environment Tasmania has secured significant funding for its impact campaign but requires an additional $25,000 to expand its impact and to guarantee that Tasmanian First Nations voices are heard across Mainland Australia.
Primary Outcome:
The project generates enough public pressure to press decision-makers into removing the threats to the Maugean skate and thus creating the conditions necessary for skate numbers to be able to reach a healthy population size.
Secondary Outcomes:
– Increased public awareness of the threats facing the endangered Maugean skate – particularly in mainland Australia
– Increased public support for the reduction or removal of threats facing the endangered Maugean skate
– The activation of a new generation of 'skate champions' with greater awareness and engagement on the issue by young people
– Hundreds of people 'taking actions' to engage with decision-makers – raising political interest in the removal of the threats impacting the skate
– A more cohesive national movement behind the need to strengthen protection for the Maugean skate and Australia's other threatened species
