St John NT is a self-funded, registered charitable organisation with a mission to save lives and build community resilience to improve the safety and healthcare of all Territorians. With over 70 years’ experience as volunteers and 50 years providing the Northern Territory’s ambulance service, St John NT understands the challenges of delivering services across the Territory and the importance of being prepared when caught in a life-threatening situation. We do this by offering programs that equip our community with the knowledge and skills to assist in saving lives, by developing confidence and leadership in our younger generation and providing an emergency response across the Northern Territory.
Last financial year, our volunteers completed 265 accredited certificates in first aid training and recorded 15,960 duty hours, providing first aid to 1,730 patients at events across the NT.
Our capacity to deliver our volunteers’ program, youth development, event health services and community education is dependent on funds raised through our commercial activities – first aid training and sales and vehicle services – as well as grants and generous donations on behalf of our community.
We are seeking philanthropic partnerships to support us in our mission and allow us to maintain and deliver these vital programs to our community. Your support could help deliver one of our community programs such as community education or youth development or contribute to one of the priority projects we are currently seeking funding for.
Together, we can create a safer and more prepared community.
Project Summary
Dressed in a paramedic uniform, Johnny Bear is our mascot that reminds people of the vital work we do every day. Currently in the form of a small keepsake teddy bear, we want to bring Johnny Bear to life as a full-sized community mascot to spread reassurance and connection with the community at public events, schools, and health awareness programs. From hands-on play to tailored learning sessions, children familiarise themselves with an ambulance and its medical equipment, talk with our educators in green and learn first aid skills. Our program helps reduce any fear or anxiety that children may experience in a medical emergency and equips them with the confidence and skills to become heroes in real-life medical emergencies. Last financial year, we taught lifesaving skills to 8,244 students across 40 schools.
We grow confident and capable individuals who are ready to lead and care for their community. From only eight years of age, our youth members develop vital life-saving skills, confidence and leadership with opportunities to grow, connect and make a real difference while having fun along the way, and some even consider a career in health care and community service.
Last financial year, our youth memberships grew to 166 across the 14 divisions. Darwin hosts a vibrant array of festivals and events throughout the year, which many of our volunteers attend. Johnny would be able to attend these events where he would be a valuable asset in promoting St John’s NT and their work.
Project Outcomes
Who doesn't love a 6-foot cuddly bear, Johnny would be an asset at programs and events where he would draw lots of attention and be a positive message for first aid in the Northern Territory. Helping to build a positive and inclusive environment.
Johnny would keep children more engaged whilst making programs, informative and training feel safe and a lot more fun. He would visit schools and not only in Darwin, the suit could easily be transported for use in Alice Springs, Katherine, Nhulunbuy and even small communities around the Territory.
Johnny is not just for children; he would encourage participation through interactive activities and photo opportunities. These would also be a hit to promote first aid training and market events on social media. Mascots can make a program more relatable and memorable, creating a stronger connection with the audience.
