Sugarvalley Neighbourhood Advancement Group Inc. (Sugarvalley Neighbourhood Centre) serves the community in the belief that together we can make a difference.

Sugarvalley Neighbourhood Advancement Group Inc. provides a safe, supportive environment where we offer services, opportunities and resources to give a sense of belonging and empowerment, by improving the lives of people in our community. West Wallsend is a very unique location, a historic mining 'town' on the western outskirts of Newcastle.

Set up in June 1982, the organisation has supported people in the community of West Wallsend NSW and the surrounding area for many years. Two part-time staff provide referral for community services, such as housing, Centrelink assistance, resumes, computers for use, photocopying, washing machine and dryer, shower, personal hygiene products, a community library and food assistance programs.
Social programs include Parents as Teachers Playgroups and a weekly social community art program. Rooms upstairs and the hall are rented out to community groups such as before and after school care and psychology. Events of significance are often acknowledged as awareness campaigns for health and wellbeing. About 15 dedicated volunteers support the two staff with the community garden, the food assistance program, the art program and the Management Committee.

Sugarvalley Neighbourhood Centre assists people who are often from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and who are isolated from social connections in their local community. Whilst funded by the NSW Government for core business activities, the organisation relies heavily on grant funding to provide many valuable programs.

Project Summary

Sugarvalley Neighbourhood Centre is located in a Heritage Listed Building, leased from the Lake Macquarie City Council. The organisation is required to paint the office, hallway and computer room.

Funding would pay for this to be done, as well as purchase storage cupboards for the upstairs section, the computer room and in the hall for the art program. Some of these cupboards would be ‘built in’ cupboards which can be secured with a padlock.

Funding would also pay for the ageing and tired looking flooring in the hall to be replaced/updated. Permissions for this project are currently being sought to go ahead with the improvements. No changes will be made to the Heritage section of the building apart from painting and purchase of storage and all with permissions of the council.

Project Outcomes

The flooring in the hall is ageing and looks dirty. Replacing the flooring will give it a fresh makeover and make it safe for all of the clients.
