Embrace Sanctuary Australia Embrace Sanctuary Australia

Embrace Sanctuary Australia co-creates communities of welcome, belonging and compassionate community for those who have been forcibly displaced from their homelands. We create social capital for refugees, trauma informed skills for volunteers and opportunities for cross cultural
engagement and understanding. Our vision: A diverse and inclusive future embracing all those seeking refuge. Our Mission: We exist to empower, educate and equip individuals, churches, community groups and those seeking refuge to create communities of welcome, connection and belonging in Australia. We are creating a movement of welcome. The global refugee crisis is of never before seen scale and it requires all of us to play a part in bringing hope to refugees. We have a broad network of schools, churches and community groups who are committed to nurturing welcoming communities and places of sanctuary for refugees. Our current priority is to equip and empower young leaders of lived refugee experience as well as local students through our Schools project to lead this movement of empathic welcome and catalyse local communities….Funding for this schools project will enable us to grow our capacity by investing in our future leaders. We have a proven track record in nurturing deep connections between local and various refugee communities that has seen growing demand for our schools engagement, as our Sanctuary Family Retreat program, as well as demand for our support of CRISP groups(community refugee sponsorship.)

Project Summary

The Sanctuary Together Project is a transformative 12-month leadership program which will run in the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne, empowering 8 mentored young women (4 of lived refugee experience and 4 local students) to transform local communities to be more inclusive for vulnerable CALD/refugee individuals and families. This leadership investment will result in 8 young change-makers equipped to impact upwards of 5000 individuals over a year, as they speak in schools and communities across the State, enabling effective peer-to-peer engagement on many complex issues.

We aim to cultivate young leaders who are empathetic, empowered, and equipped to drive change in their communities. Through immersive learning, these young women will not only grow personally but will also act as catalysts for healing and social cohesion. They will graduate with a deep capacity to listen empathetically, engage across cultures, and learn from experiences vastly different from their own.
This will break down negative stereotypes, barriers and racism that often obstructs the full engagement of refugee/CALD youth in society.

Project Outcomes

1. Meaningful Cross-Cultural Experiences
Through interactive cross-cultural exchange workshops promoting empathy, storytelling, and shared learning between participants of diverse backgrounds, 100% of participants will report an increased
understanding of cross-cultural perspectives and an ability to
articulate common values across cultural lines.
2. Trauma-Informed and Culturally Sensitive Support
Professional support sessions (individual and group) using trauma-informed, culturally respectful frameworks tailored to young women with refugee backgrounds, will ensure that 80% of participants with lived refugee experience will report increased emotional safety and support through mid- and post-program evaluations.
3.Compassionate Communities of Safety
"Safe Listening Circles” will enable all participants to share their stories and deepen relationships in a respectful and structured environment.
This will result in 90% of participants expressing increased trust and
connection with peers, as measured by pre- and post-circle surveys.
4. Opportunities for Self-Care and Skills Development.
Skill-building workshops on emotional regulation, mindfulness, communication, and self-care will be captured in each participants personal self-care plan, demonstrating improved application of self-care strategies in reflective journals.
5. Participants to Co-Lead Sanctuary Family Retreats.
Participants will co-lead one or more components
of a Sanctuary Family Retreat, applying cross-cultural and trauma-
informed practices in real-world settings.
100% of participants will co-facilitate at least one retreat
activity, with post-event evaluations demonstrating increased
confidence and leadership effectiveness.
6. Growth of Leadership Capacity
A structured leadership development curriculum (minimum 20 hours) with a focus on advocacy, facilitation, and community engagement enabling each participant to complete a leadership portfolio and design youth activities and discussions.
